I recently met with a business man who is doing something he has always wanted to do professionally, and that is to help people to learn about how they can use the barter system to save themselves thousands of dollars during this recessionary period.

He met us at a restaurant for lunch where he used his trade money to pay for his meal.

I asked him if we could get together because I wanted to hear more about what I considered to be a growing opportunity for people who are short on cash, but who have a vault filled with valuable talents and multiple skill sets that they could trade away for goods and services.

Many well-known firms are involved in the barter industry.  Children’s cancer camps, golf and yacht clubs as well as bigger names such as: Avon, Marriott and Gold’s Gyms are just a few that participate in barter programs.

The way they generally work is that they ask people to join for a certain fee which entitles them to a lifetime of benefits.  Members are asked to follow-up with quarterly accounting fees that pay for an automatic tally of what they are spending on trade dollars per month.

Other outlay expenses go to a broker which can be anywhere from 12 to as much as 14% or more.  To offset some of these charges barter companies will offer to give back monetary outlays by offering trade dollars for taking part in sessions or for selling something at the session.

Member referrals are also compensated and trade dollars are awarded for even just taking the time to fill out the initial purchase plan.

Bartering is great for professional support too because it brings new customers into a pre-existing commercial concern.  It is a good way to promote businesses to people who may or may not be part of the bartering community per say.

The more, I heard about bartering, the more I was convinced that it just made good sense.  I started thinking, “I really could get into this.”

The gentleman I met with gave me some very well written pamphlets and background information, just enough to make me want to go online and investigate more about how to use trade in combination with dollars as currency.

I was tempted to work for his company on a commission basis because I felt that it would be a great way to service the community with their economic challenges.

I can see that I could meet some great people who enjoy getting out and living their lives and at the same time, can take advantage of all that the barter system has to offer. What follows is some additional information on the subject:
