There is a lot to be said for learning everything there is to know about social relations. When we are comfortable with ourselves in public we can concentrate more on handling all kinds of different circumstances and take on the most challenging personality types with confidence.
The first step to better social relations is a greater understanding of the elements of communication. Conversations involve more than just talking and sending messages. Conversing requires a fair and equitable exchange of experiences. Taking the time to learn how to improve our verbal and non-verbal interactions with others helps us to gain their attention and their full respect. If we take to heart what we learn about how to get along with others, we can even transform challenging relationships and ultimately, avoid disputes. Too much attention on what we want to say, and not enough on listening, leaves people we are conversing with feeling ignored which ultimately makes them reluctant to socialize with us again.
The second step is setting objectives for our social encounters through both planning and persistence. Generally, the goal of social relations is to improve one’s reputation by creating a good strong image. The art of social relations is all about establishing a continuous social platform with which to build and launch an interesting public profile on a regular basis.
The third step is conducting an image audit to determine what others think of us. It is very helpful to ask the people who are closet to us why they like to spend time with us. If during this process we hear some negative things about ourselves, we have the option to turn our deficits into our assets.
The fourth step is caring for our network. One of the best ways to show our willingness to be a team player is by being as accommodating as possible. Lack of flexibility and unfriendliness leaves people cold. We need to be prepared to give in, if, and when necessary.
The fifth step is to make ourselves highly-visible. People like and enjoy being around people who are witty, creative and committed to all kinds of projects, new acquaintanceships and to the actual act of socializing in general. The main aim is to win the support of others who will repay our actions in kind by speaking out in our favor; however, it is important for us to keep in mind that all good relationships are always mutually beneficial, and regardless of a person’s social status, he or she should always be treated with the greatest respect.
