It is hard to imagine a person more isolated from the source than someone who is indifferent, hostile and filled with contempt for others. Individuals who live in a place of such silent darkness, a space barren of the joy of the Lord’s light, these negative imaginings are a very real reality. It is their constant certainty, which is conjured up, over-and-over again in the evidence they manufacturer in their minds. The thought of even mild enthusiasm eludes them. For such persons, life has taken its toll. They have voiced their concerns to those around them, expressed their fears time-and-time again, and reached out for others. But, for some reason they never thought to turn to GOD.
Spiritual stability is not a guaranteed state. It is a frame of mind that is developed like a muscle that is repeatedly worked. It is a willingness of spirit that is slowly cultivated by a person who is committed to bringing the Lord into their life at all costs. Like any presence, God must be acknowledged. Sometimes, a deep connection to God only occurs if a person is faced with significant problems. Trials and trepidations require the strength of character to decide what needs to be done, and what we will do to sort out our troubles. This is usually, the starting point for intimate discussions with the Almighty.
The ever-present idea of God as one’s companion in life is the nucleus that surrounds one’s spiritual center and protects it from contamination. This realization cannot be challenged by events or the opinions of others. One defends one’s “best friend,” generally, at all costs. It is, to our closest confidant, that we turn to when all we trust is challenged, and it appears that all hope is lost.
People who are spiritually stable do not fall prey to temptations. They are not self-indulgent. They are searching for something more to bring about a sense of personal satisfaction in themselves. They do not succumb to the pressures or forces that lead others to commit unethical or unhealthy acts. Spiritual stability is a way of being as much as it is – a way of living. It is one’s intention in the world. It is the loving and committed manner in which one interfaces with everyone and everything. It is standing up for one’s truth amidst all the guises of deception. It is the purity of one’s soul, laid bare for all to view in its unashamed starkness.
When we are spiritually stable we can approach others, even if our words and our actions are not well received, and still know in our hearts, without question, that what we are trying to share is – truly genuine. A diamond is still a diamond, even if others try to pass us off as an imitation stone of lesser quality and value. We are all rare gems in the eyes of our Creator.
