Professionals who perform cosmetic rehabilitation do so in environments with very special lighting arrangements which are far from ordinary. Camouflage therapists quickly learn the best illumination to use that will offer them the greatest light efficiencies for their procedures. These very special make up applications require shadow-free lighting. Lighting products in aesthetic environments must be stylish and work in concert with the interior of the facility. They must also be highly functional and safe to use.
The value of just the right fixtures cannot be underestimated. The American Lighting Association has many bright ideas on the subject. They are considered to be the most reputable authority with many showrooms across the nation. They sell lighting accessories and fixtures that span a broad price range with their stock offering consumers choices between $5.00 to their more expensive lighting systems at $15,000. Working with specialists in this area is essential since more advancement have been made in the lighting industry over the last two years than any other time in the past three decades.
In a makeup studio or a clinical environment where camouflage therapy must be performed most efficiently – the lighting must meet many specific demands. The provider of these services must be trained in how lighting works and in the advances. The standard is to double-check on the form of illumination that will be required to ensure that it will be right for specific applications. Two very important things to watch out for are: (1) that the lighting is placed in the appropriate location and spaced apart correctly, (2) that the size of the lighting fixtures are in proportion to the circumference of the top of the vanity surface area. Another concern is additional lighting and its effects in combination with the recessed lighting systems.
As stated before, lighting systems should be inspired by the design of the décor. They can be attractively integrated into discrete settings or they can add a bit of drama to a more conservative or traditional environment. Aesthetic providers must carefully consider the bulbs for their lighting fixtures to ensure that they cast light that imitates day, evening and office light. For daylight in windowless rooms, halogen bulbs are the better selection because they generate a white light that is very natural and will not add more color to the skin tone pigments in the cover cream palates. They are a bit more expensive than typical incandescent bulb products (which are hot to the touch, waste lots of energy and will be phased out by 2014) but they meet all the demands for tract lighting fixtures since they discharge light in specific directions as needed. Florescent (office light) is created when electricity interacts with compact fluorescent light along with other gases to produce light. This form of lighting comes in a broad range of colors and can be easily retrofitted for incandescent bulbs. LED (light-emitting diode) is not essentially a light bulb. It is a 1/8 inch square chip that glows when electricity passes through it. This type of bulb has many tiny chips that cluster together to pass through it. The LED bulbs are more expensive at this time and are not the easiest to locate but in the future they should be more accessible, more adaptable to greater number of fixtures and more affordable as they become more common.
Glossary of light bulb label terms –
Kelvin – color of quality of light which increases its cooler cast by number
Color rendition index – (CRI) how well light reproduces color
Wattage – amount of energy consumed
Lumens – intensity of light the bulb casts
Different fixtures can make better use of light if used in strategic settings. For example: a small portable lamp is good for task lighting on a table top, whereas; a downlight illuminates a beautifully framed piece of artwork. Individual lights look terrific on a staircase and track lighting is a great way to emphasize architectural details and cove lighting. Scones traditionally balance light equally on both sides of mirrors. Overhead fixtures light up small work spaces sufficiently when accompanied by digital lighting desk lamps. These types of lighting systems must be positional to illuminate unwanted glare. For accent lighting dimmers can be used.
