Helping our clients and patients by enhancing their abilities to better care for themselves is at the root of recovery.
The world of a person who struggles with chronic skin conditions can be an alarming place. It is up to the skin care specialist to inspire reassurance and hope for aesthetic resolution whenever possible. Self-care is of primary importance if recovery is to be expected. Caring is communicated in many ways but none as vital as in efforts that are intended to aid clients/patients in being more aware of the significance of their own part in effective interventions. Therapeutic treatment providers must monitor and value their clients and patients practices in terms of specific home care situations. They must listen attentively to their input in order to coach them in making behavioral modifications. If they do not, they will make their clients / patients feel overpowered and inadequate and they will be less inclined to perform the necessary self-care required. Emotions such as frustration, helplessness and anger will surface occasionally in the course of ongoing treatments because so much of the day-to-day care is ultimately left in the hands of the client / patient. A professional posture of advocacy and encouragement and caring support can be very productive in times of healing stagnation because it helps us carry our clients / patients through their darkest of days.
